Considering the circumstances of art today

Light makes things visible.

Paint is light broken into colours.

Colour is temperature and light, defined as particles, waves; or perception, acquaintance with anything through the senses and a lot of psychology (Goethe).

Colours are connected to each other, often guided by the most dominant, from the inside as well as from the outside, for exampel daylight, dawn, twilight.

Paintings are happily married with matter as well because they can try to ignore the substance of colours. Easily defined: How do you add the third dimension in a painting with only two?

Paint, especially oil paint, has the third dimension in its pigment and emulsion body when it´s applied heavily encrusted. This is called impasto.

To omit any kind of texture and paint on glass-like surface is to express a wish to create a virtual reality, illusion or awareness of objects. The 600 year old discovery of perspective in composition and colour opens the curtains to virtual sensations. The lense of the eye reacts towards perspective in landscape paintings and perspective as in real landscape. The sensation of landscape is real in both.

But that which makes a remark in our soul is to feel the third dimension in both matter and illusion in the same artwork. This emotion is the most powerful of all and dates back around 300,000 years.

Dear reader, art lover, philosopher etc,

this introduction was meant to open your consciousness to my artwork, including the problems attached to describing. If you find that your receptivity to visual art has been expanded by these few words – then I have succeeded!

Sincerely Yours

Rainer Hoffmann
